Because there is so much poverty in South Africa we decided to start charity work for children in the area. I found out that there is a big need for After Cares. When children come home from school there is no one to look after them. The children grow up in bad circumstances and are confronted with drug & alcohol abuse, domestic violence, rape and gangs on a daily base. With an After Care children have a safe place to stay after school. The After Care provides a healthy meal every day. The teachers (two per After Care) run structured programs so the children can do their home work (in a peaceful environment) make arts and crafts, sing, dance, read do sports and have time to relax. The After Care starts at 14h.00 and ends between 17h.00 and 18h.00. During school holidays we run a day program.

All the After Cares are mainly financed by our selves and some of the money comes in through sponsors. We started an After Care 3,5 years ago in Franschhoek, a small touristic town near Stellenbosch. Because of the success of this After Care the Board of Tourism recently decided to support us. Therefore we could set up a new after care. About a year ago we set up an After Care for the Children of our farm workers. About 25 children join every day.

Because of a very big new sponsor in Holland, het Sint Vitus College in Bussum, we are able to set up an After Care in the town ship of Stellenbosch, Kayamandi. Malibongwe Gwele who lives in Kayamandi is mainly in charge to set up this After Care. He has a degree in social development and has been involved in various social community projects.

Out of our own experience we have seen that the After Cares are a great success. The children have improved a lot. They are more disciplined, built up a far better self esteem and their school results have improved as well. But most important, the children love going to the after care.

From the wine selling point of view we decided that 10% of every bottle of VUURBERG WINE sold will go to the After Care Project. But this is not enough. To keep the After Care going more money is needed. With your help the After Care Project can be a huge long-term success. It will even give more children the opportunity to join. You can help changing the lives of these children and give them a chance for the future. Sponsors will receive email/newsletters about the projects on a frequent base. I would be very happy to show everyone around who wants to see one of the After Care projects.
